Yamin Hazarika memorial function on July 24

GUWAHATI, July 19 - In a bid to commemorate the death anniversary of the late Yamin Hazarika, former DCP, Delhi Police, a memorial function will be held in the city on July 24.

The memorial meeting is being organised by Women�s Hub, a collective of woman professionals from different walks of life, at Blue Paradise, VIP Road, Sixmile.

On the occasion, the Yamin Hazarika Woman of Substance Award-2016 will be given to a distinguished woman. A panel discussion on �Women: Breaking Stereotypes� will be held on the occasion.

Yamin Hazarika was born in Guwahati to the late Sirajul Hussain Hazarika and Shameem Ara Hazarika. She was a 1977-batch DANIPS (NCT of Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Police Service) officer.

Hazarika was a recipient of the Nirman and Mahila Shiromani awards. A deputy commissioner of police (crime against women) known for her impeccable track record in the force, including a three-month stint in Bosnia, she died on July 24, 1999. She was 43.

It was in Bosnia, where she was posted as part of the UN peacekeeping force, that she was found to be suffering from leukaemia. She was treated at the Tata Memorial Institute in Mumbai and at AIIMS, Delhi where she passed away.
