Bad roads in South Karimganj LAC irk commuters

NILAMBAZAR, Sept 29 - People of different areas under South Karimganj LAC in Karimganj district are suffering a lot due to the dilapidated condition of most of the link roads passing through different villages in the constituency.

It is to be mentioned here that the Kaliganj-Shib Bari road via Khagail, Binodini; the road from Chargola to Kaliganj; from Puamara to Ratanpur and Ashimganj to Raghutuk Bazar are the major roads in the area under South Karimganj LAC that help the people of the area connect with the NH-8 as well as other parts of the district. However, these major link roads are lying in a dilapidated condition with many potholes.

Although bowing to mounting pressure from different sources, the government repaired these link roads during the Congress regime, misappropriation of a lions share of the sanctioned funds by the contractors engaged in the work has resulted in poor quality construction, as a result of which all the above roads have at many places started wearing off, literally becoming death traps for the common denizens.

On the other hand, even though there have been repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, but no positive steps regarding construction of overbridges on the Badarpur-Agartala rail route at Suprakandi and Nilambazar point for connecting the PWD roads upto NH-8, have been taken as yet.

It is to be said that though foundation stone of a number of paver-block road projects, in most of the gaon panchayats within the South Karimganj Development Block were laid just ahead of the General Election 2019, some of them are lying half done. Besides, there have been allegations of quality-compromise in construction of some of the completed roads in the LAC by the contractor. The common masses have expressed their annoyance that despite repeated requests to complete the works of the half-done roads, the contractor has remained indifferent towards the issue.

It needs mention here that though a sizeable amount of funds for developmental works, particularly for the surface communication network have been sanctioned, but due to the lackadaisical attitude of the contractors and technical officers (engineers) involved with it, the works have not been completed as per norms and in the stipulated time.

The common people of the constituency have urged the authority, specifically the Deputy Commissioner, to intervene in the matter.
