GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - The Urban Winter Festival Metropolis 2017 under way at the Nehru Park in the city came to an abrupt end on its closing day today after a team of GMDA personnel instructed the organisers to close down the festival for violating the norms for utilising the area.
The step was taken after Guwahati Development Department Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmas objection to using the childrens park for the event.
In a tweet this afternoon, Minister Sarma questioned the GMDA for granting permission for the fest.
Being held in the city for the past five years, the event started on January 6 this year and was scheduled to end today.
According to GMDA sources, after the reports of norms violation and littering of the park, an inquiry was ordered by GMDA Chairman Dhiren Baruah.
On inquiry, we found that some of the provisions related to the usage of childrens area were violated, which led to the action. However, we ensured that no public inconvenience was caused due to the closure order and the people got enough time for dispersal, the sources added.
