SILCHAR, May 18 - A day after incessant rains swept across Silchar, people are reeling under waterlogging. Since most of the drains and exit canals of the city are clogged, water has overflowed inundating roads, lanes and bylanes in most of the areas.
With the low lying areas still submerged, people along the National Highway, CR Avenue and Sonai Road, besides the residents of Malugram, Shillongpatty, Link Road and other areas are facing immense difficulty in coming out of their homes. Most of the educational institutes here remained closed on Wednesday because of waterlogging.
On the other hand, according to statistics received from the Water Resource Department, 212 mm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours, which is by far the second highest quantum of downpour on a single day after 1989. Rainfall recorded on a single day in that year was 243 mm.
Meanwhile, the water level of Barak river measured at the Annapurna Ghat here was 19.15 m which is a little below the estimated danger level of 19.83 m at that point.
