Villagers help rescue abducted trader in Garo Hills

TURA, Dec 28 - A fish trader from Krishnai in Goalpara was today rescued from the clutches of a kidnapping gang when he was being whisked away in North Garo Hills.

The petty trader identified as Mofidul Islam was rescued by villagers of Thapa Dajongre under Mendipathar Police Station in North Garo Hills district. He had gone to the village to sell fish when he was stopped by the kidnapping group.

Nearby villagers, who witnessed the incident, immediately informed the police. They then rushed to the aid of the fish trader. Seeing the police and the group of villagers, the kidnappers rushed from the spot and disappeared into the nearby jungles leaving behind the abducted person.

The kidnappers were chased by the angry villagers as well as the policemen. However, the group managed to give the crowd the slip. �Operations by the police are still on after the rescue of Islam�, said SP of NGH, Ramesh Singh.

Islam was later rushed to the nearby Mendipathar PHC where he was given medical aid.

Residents have strongly condemned the incident saying these acts were putting the entire Garo community to shame.

ANLA cadre surrenders: A cadre of the A�chik National Liberation Army (ANLA) today surrendered at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills. Hearsing D Shira alias Alabok laid down a 7.65 pistol, four rounds, a dagger, demand notes and stamps of ANLA.
