ULFA 'lieutenant' killed in encounter

MANGALDAI, Mar 29 (PTI): A 'lieutenant' of the banned militant group ULFA was today killed in an encounter with security forces in Lower Assam's Udalguri district.

Mridul Kalita alias Soumarjyoti was the commander of ULFA's 29 battalion, official sources said.

On a tip off about Mridul's presence at Dalanghat in Kaliagaon area, a joint force of the police and the army launched an operation leading to a shootout that killed the militant, they said.

A 7.62 mm pistol, two magazines, 12 rounds of ammunition, five mobile phones, 92 SIM cards, Rs 2.04 lakh, two grenade pins and some documents were seized from the spot, the sources said.

He had joined the ULFA in 1997 and was involved in several subversive activities, they added.
