ULFA launches extortion drive in Darrang district

MANGALDAI, June 24 - The United Liberation Front of Asom � Independent (ULFA-I) has now become active in various parts of Darrang district. What is more alarming is that a section of traders have received extortion notices from the banned outfit causing concern for the traders.

A trader of Mangaldai has lodged a complaint with the police station after receiving an extortion notice from the outfit. It is learnt that the trader was given a deadline of June 24 to pay an amount of Rs 8 lakh to the militant group, threatening him with dire consequences. In this connection, a case (No. 477/ 2018) U/S 387 IPC R/W Section 10/13 U.A. (P) Act has been registered in Mangaldai police station.

A section of traders who did not wish to be named told this correspondent that the ULFA (I) has been serving extortions notices to a section of traders which has become matter of concern for them. �Although the state police has claimed that the activities of the underground groups have been declining in the wake of stepped-up operations carried out by the security forces, ULFA is still active in some pockets. We need a peaceful atmosphere in running our business, but spurt in activities of the militant group is likely to affect the business in the long run,� the traders observed while sharing information with this correspondent.
