AGARTALA, Sept 19 - Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been targeted by drug mafia for launching a massive crackdown on the multi-crore rupees drug smuggling in Tripura, said BJP State general secretary Pratima Bhowmik here on Wednesday.

Drug peddlers had a meeting in Mynamar very recently and plotted to eliminate the Chief Minister as punishment for his onslaught on drug and ganja smuggling, she said while quoting intelligence inputs of a Central agency.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Security, Manik Das had called up and informed me about the plot to kill our Chief Minister. He wanted our views on the security arrangement for the CM, who is also the State party president, she said.

She continued, The Chief Minister who is currently in Delhi, is scheduled to return on September 21 next. Once he returns, we will discuss the threat to his life and put forward our suggestions/observations to the competent authority.

Bhowmik said over 50,000 kg of ganja was seized during the past six months, apart from recovery of substantial quantity of heroin and brown sugar.

The all-out onslaught on drug mafia, which was applauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has angered the drug paddlers. Thats why he is being targeted, she said.

When contacted, DGP AK Sukla only said, Our responsibility is to protect the Chief Minister, Governor and other dignitaries and keep reviewing their security arrangement periodically for update, if required.

Asked if the State police had received any input from Central agency about the plot, Sukla said, Dont put words in my mouth.

Currently, the Chief Minister is under Y category security coverage.
