Traffic police launches anti-drinking drive

GUWAHATI, Dec 24 - Guwahati Traffic Police launched an anti-drinking drive today to curtail accidents during the festive season. The drive will continue till December 31.

Deputy Commissioner Traffic Pranjit Borah said, �Drinking alcohol and using other substances are high during this festive season. So the occurrence of accidents is also high. We are about to celebrate Christmas and New Year, so we have set up several check points in the city to maintain a peaceful environment.�

Borah said the drive would basically be carried out from 7 pm daily in association with the transport department, excise department and health department. �We have a breath analyser to detect the level of consumption of alcohol. We will sensitise the public on the need to avoid drinking while driving. Anyone found violating the rule will be penalised,� he added.

Such drives in the festive season during the last four years have helped in curtailing accident-induced deaths in the city.

In 2016 Guwahati city recorded 312 road accident deaths. In 2017 the figure was 279, in 2018 it was 247, in 2019 it was 249 and the number of such deaths till November this year stood at 189.
