Trader held for smuggling timber

GUWAHATI, Aug 5 - Noonmati Police today arrested businessman Ajay Poddar on charges of smuggling timber. Poddar was arrested at Noonmati and sent to judicial custody, ACP Purabi Mazumdar said.

The police had received information on July 28 that two trucks laden with illegal timber from Meghalaya were hidden at Poddar�s office premises located in the Forest Gate area of Noonmati.

�The police searched the premises on that day itself and seized the two vehicles. The timber was in vehicles meant for carrying explosives,� Mazumdar said. Poddar has been booked under Sections 379 and 420 of the IPC and relevant sections of the Assam Forest Regulation Act.
