GUWAHATI, May 30 - The All Assam Students Union today alleged that construction work at the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectricity Project site has totally ignored the scientific recommendations of the experts of Assam and the damage to the guard wall near the project site has once again exposed the erroneous construction process of the project.
The stand of the experts of Assam stands vindicated now as we can see the extent of damage by a single spell of heavy rains, the AASU said.
Not just a guard wall has been damaged, but there has been landslide close to another guard wall, the students body said today, asking the NHPC, State government and Union government to stop construction work immediately and take scientific precautionary measures first.
It needs mention here that the construction work at the project site resumed last year, after a gap of 8 years.
An AASU team led by its general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi recently visited the project site and took stock of the situation.
The AASU has been warning about the possible threat to the life and property of the downstream people because of this project. The experts of Assam have also assessed the possible threats of constructing this project in its present form, in an earthquake prone zone. Our expert committee report clearly mentions about the landslides and other issues that may cause larger damages. Unless the scientific recommendation of the experts of Assam is implemented thoroughly, this project is not safe for us, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and chief advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya stated.
