TE chowkidar murdered at Makum

DOOMDOOMA, June 23 - Tension prevails in Makum and Doomdooma areas following the murder of a night Chowkidar Jakie Baiga alias Raju of Betjan Tea Estate under Makum PS in Tinsukia district on Monday night by green tea leaf thieves.

According to information, Jekie was engaged as a night chowkider in Section No. 6 of Betjan Tea Estate along with two other chowkidars on Monday night as green tea leaves are being stolen frequently from the garden. At midnight, a group of tea leaf thieves attacked the chowkidars and killed Jakie. The other two chowkidars were found missing since then. Police picked up the two other chowkidars this afternoon.

After this incident, the irate labourers of the garden under the aegis of ATTSA and AASAA blocked the NH-37 at Makum with the body of the deceased from 12 pm to 4 pm. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, compensation for the kin of the deceased and to stop green tea leaf theft. Meanwhile, Doomdooma Unit of ATTSA also closed down Doomdooma town at 12 pm today in protest against the incident.
