BARPETA, Jan 27 � Chief Justice (Acting) of the Gauhati High Court, Sreedhar Rao, said that the setting up of more and more family courts is not a good sign and stressed on mutual understanding instead of court litigation as far as family disputes are concerned.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating a family court here this afternoon, Rao referred to the large number of pending cases relating to family disputes and said that most of the victims of these disputes are women and children and there is an urgent need to deliver justice to them.
Rao informed that more than 2,400 cases relating to family matters are pending in Barpeta district alone and he expressed the hope that the establishment of this court will expedite their disposal.
However, he stressed that the purpose of establishment of such courts is only to mitigate disputes, and hence settling family matters mutually is better than getting entangled in litigation.
The establishment of this court is expected to help poor victims of domestic disputes. The family court will also reduce the burden of litigation in the district courts. Justice AK Goswami accompanied the Chief Justice in the inaugural function. A number of leading citizens, judges and advocates also attended the function.
Later, the eminent lawyer visited the Barpeta Bar and held a discussion with the advocates there. Addressing the meeting with Dipak Das, president of the Bar Association, in the chair, Rao stressed the need of honesty and ethical practices on the part of the law practitioners. The Bar Association felicitated Rao and Goswami.
