DHEMAJI, Nov 5 - Strong cyclone accompanied by hailstorm lashed the entire Paschim Jonai area in Dhemaji district late last night and damaged dwelling houses, crops and other properties.
The gusty winds uprooted trees, bamboo groves and arecanut trees resulting in damages to dwelling houses, cow sheds, schools buildings and offices at Somkong, Madhupur and Laimekuri, Telam and Dekapam panchayats under Jonai revenue circle.
As per Circle Officer�s report, around 350 dwelling houses with many cow sheds, standing crops and vegetables were damaged by the storm. It blew away roofs and CGI sheets of Police Out Post at Telam and also damaged three schools at Madhupur, Laimekuri and Borong area. Two naamghars were also damaged by the storm.
In the worst-affected Somkong panchayat, the storm hit 15 villages and left around 100 houses damaged, besides destroying paddy crop and vegetables in a large scale.
There are reports of domestic animal mortality in the areas, but no human casualty has been reported so far.
�We are assessing the loss and damages caused by the storm. The figure of house damage may increase as we are accumulating damage reports received from the affected sites,� said Jonai Circle Officer (attached) Nekib Shayed Baruah.
�So far, we have been informed that 235 houses were damaged, and out of them 74 houses fully damaged,� he added.
The storm destroyed electric lines at several portions thereby disrupting power supply in the subdivision. However, the Power department engaged its men and machines and restored energy supply this evening.
