JORHAT, Jan 29 - The Assam unit of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) the youth wing of the Indian National Congress launched a campaign to prepare a National Register of Unemployed (NRU) at the Jorhat District Congress Bhawan here recently.

Kicking off the process for the state, the IYC Assam unit vice-president Ankita Dutta said that the NRU will be prepared by IYC by collecting data of unemployed people across the country to highlight the increasing rate of unemployment which was very alarming.

Dutta said that every unemployed Indian can register in the NRU by giving a miss call on a toll-free number 8151994411. The number of people giving miss calls will be constantly maintained and updated in the NRU, she said.

Dutta said the IYC has undertaken such a campaign in view of the fast increasing number of unemployed persons due to the anti-poor and pro-rich policies adopted by the Narendra Modi-led Government at the Centre in the past almost six years.

The register will show the volume of people who are suffering from unemployment due to the BJP-led Governments policies, the state Youth Congress vice-president observed. Dutta said that the exercise will be continuing for the next two weeks and could be extended. She said that after collecting and compiling the data, the Central leaders of IYC will submit the same to the Prime Minister to show him and his Government the present real picture of the economy the country.

By carrying out demonetisation and the GST, the Narendra Modi-led Government failed to generate employment and has led to economic downslide, Dutta said.

She said the objective behind preparing the NRU was to focus on unemployment among the public and promote the notion of Naukri Ki Baat.

It may be mentioned here that on Thursday last the IYC in Delhi formally launched the campaign to prepare the NRU across India.

Later on the same day (January 24), Meghnath Chetri, Assam unit general secretary of IYC, while speaking to newspersons at the Jorhat District Congress Bhawan, condemned the arrest of IYC Assam unit president Kamrul Islam Choudhury on January 23 by Dispur Police on charges of instigating violence during the anti-CAA stir in Guwahati last month.

Chetri said that police have lodged 32 cases against Choudhury on false charges of inciting violence without any evidence.

Stating that several Congress workers have been arrested by police across the state on false charges, he alleged that the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Government was trying to intimidate those who were opposing the amended Citizenship law as the authoritarian Government cannot tolerate dissent and criticism.

Chetri said the IYC demanded immediate unconditional release of Choudhury and cautioned the Government of undertaking a massive stir.
