JORHAT, Jan 6 - Thousands of people including a large number of women today came out to participate in a rally organised by the AJYCPs Titabar unit to oppose CAA at a field at the Titabar Chariali in Titabar town of Jorhat district.

The protesters, holding banners and placards against the amended Citizenship Act, shouted slogans against the BJP-led Central and State Governments and also against BJP leaders in Delhi and Dispur.

Addressing the rally named Ranahunkar the AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah for going against the interests of the Assamese society and imposing a law vehemently opposed by the vast majority of the people of the State as CAA was a big threat to the very existence of the culture and languages of ingenious people of the State.

Targeting Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cabinet colleague Himanta Biswa Sarma for supporting the Act, Changmai said that the duo (Sonowal and Sarma) was not entitled to decide about the destiny and future of Assamese people. The Assamese people themselves will decide about their future and destiny as it is the general public who voted the BJP, AGP and their alliance partners to power for a five-year term.... it is again the public who knows how to dislodge political parties at the hustings.

The AJYCP leader pointed out that protest against CAA has spread from streets to sports venue with slogans against the Chief Minister and the Finance and Health and Family Welfare Minister were raised among the spectators at the T-20 match disrupted by rains in Guwahati on Sunday.

AASU organising secretary Jul Khound, noted singer Prasenjit Lahon and students representatives from Gauhati University, Handique Girls College were among those who addressed the gathering.
