GUWAHATI, Nov 14 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today condoled the death of Indian Army jawan from Assam Haradhan Chandra Roy, who embraced martyrdom in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday due to heavy shelling by Pakistani Army across LoC, in an act of ceasefire violation.
Terming the incident as a dastardly act, the Chief Minister said that the jawan from Dhubri district attained martyrdom in the service of the nation and left behind a glowing example of patriotism and valour.
Though Haradhan Chandra Roy laid down his life in the line of duty, he would remain immortal and would keep inspiring the young generation through his bravery and sacrifice, Sonowal added.
Roy, who had joined the Army in 2001, leaves behind his wife and a two-year-old child besides his ailing parents. Family sources said that his death would adversely hit the family and the State government should provide his wife with some livelihood support.
Roy hailed from Phutkibari-Medipara area under Sapatgram Police Station in Dhubri district. His native place descended into a pall of gloom on the Diwali day, with all villagers deciding against any type of celebration.
Friday's major flare-up in which Roy died took place in various parts of Uri, Keran sector of Kupwara district and Izmarg in Gurez sector of Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Army sources said that along with Roy, 11 people, including four soldiers of the Army, a Border security Force (BSF) sub-inspector and six civilians were killed in the firing.
According to Army sources, Pakistan initiated the unprovoked ceasefire violations along the LoC using mortars and other weapons deliberately targeting civilian areas. The Indian Army also retaliated strongly destroying Pakistani Army bunkers, fuel dumps and launch pads.
Army sources said that there were huge casualties on the Pakistan side as 6 to 7 Pakistani soldiers were killed and around 10-12 others injured.
The Army has also released videos showing mortars hitting and damaging Pakistani bunkers along the LoC.
The Chief Minister also extended his condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
