Silpi Divas organised at Rupkonwar�s birthplace

DIBRUGARH, Jan 17 - Silpi Divas, which is observed across the State on the death anniversary of noted Assamese film maker, playwright, poet and bard Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala on January 17, was organised today at the nearby Tamulbari Tea Estate, the birth place of the cultural doyen of Assam.

The entire Tamulbari Tea Estate including workers and management along with Dibrugarh District Maina Parijat, Jana Sankriti Kendra, Dibrugarh, Gana Natya Sangha, local Silpi Samaj and nearby villages paid homage to the noted cultural icon at his birth place within the campus of the garden.

Noted author, translator and one of the leading tea planters Devi Prasad Bagrodia, who also happens to be one of the owners of the garden, paid his respect by garlanding and showering flower petals at the bust of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala. He also lit the traditional lamp and incense sticks at the pedestal of the bust. Among several others, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Sushanta Dutta, noted dramatist Ashim Sarma, management officials and media persons also paid floral tributes to the cultural doyen. Local artists and members from Maina Parijat also sang the songs written by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala during the homage ceremony.

Devi Prasad Bagrodia, while speaking on the occasion described Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala as one of the complete Assamese men, whose contribution to the Assamese society is immense. �His works particularly in the field of literature, culture and film making is indeed a great contribution to the State. His work culture, ideals, vision and love for the State and its culture needs to be imbibed by one and all. It is our duty to promote his works,� said Bagrodia. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sushanta Dutta, noted dramatist Ashim Sarma and local journalist of a vernacular daily Jadav Gogoi also spoke on the occasion.
