Shivangi, Sidhanta win gold for Assam

GUWAHATI, Jan 17: Shivangi Sharma won two gold medals while Sidhanta Gogoi clinched another to boost Assam�s performance in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games.

At the Dr Zakir Hussain Aquatic Centre in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here today, Shivangi won the gold medals in girls U-21 200m and 800m freestyle events. She pushed back Bhavika Dugar of Tamil Nadu and Jasmina Gurung of Haryana to second and third spots respectively in the 200m race.

Other Assam swimmers � Rajashree Buragohain and Anubhuti Baruah made a podium finish by winning a bronze each in U-21 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly events respectively.

Earlier, Assam began the day with a silver medal which came through weightlifter Prabal Pratim Gogoi in the 55kg weight category. He lifted 90kg in snatch and 117kg in clean and jerk. Gitashree Sonowal won another silver medal in weightlifting in the 49kg category. The U-17 girl lifted 60kg in snatch and 82kg in clean and jerk.

Later in the day at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium, Sidhanta won a gold in the boys U-21 weightlifting in the 61kg category. He lifted 121kg in snatch and 151kg in clean and jerk. Charu Pesi of Arunachal Pradesh and Jacob Vanlaltiuanga of Mizoram got silver and bronze medals respectively.

Meanwhile, Assam U-17 girls football team entered the semifinals defeating Mizoram 5-2.
