GUWAHATI, Feb 20 Voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has hailed the instructions of the Chief Minister to the senior officers of the departments and agencies concerned in matters of tackling flash flood in the city.

In a statement, the voluntary organisation has also suggested that the city drains should be cleaned by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) once a week, at least till June next. It also called for urgent steps to shift the fish market from the Solabeel area and remove the encroachments on the wetland areas.

It has also called for steps to clean and deepen the Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rivers and to implement the plans to make the channels of the Silsako Beel and Chachal areas effective expeditiously.

The three agencies GMC, Public Works Department (PWD) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) should become active and the officers of these agencies should demonstrate their commitment to the people.

The residents of the city should also behave in a responsible manner. They should dump their solid wastes on the dustbins early in the morning. The GMC should also assume the responsibility of collecting solid wastes from the doorsteps of the Guwahatians. The Guwahatians should also extend their cooperation to the GMC in respect of keeping the city clean.

Above all, the State Government should make adequate allocations for the purpose, said the voluntary organisation.
