GUWAHATI, Nov 30 - Educationist, social worker and former principal of Handique Girls� College, Senehi Begum passed away at a city nursing home this morning.
She was 77 and had been ailing for some time.
A resident of Ambari, Begum, who was a very popular person and used to be at the forefront of many social initiatives, was associated with a number of organisations engaged in diverse fields and led an active life.
She became the NCC Major � the highest rank for a woman officer in NCC during that time � in 1983.
An accomplished anchor for children�s programmes in All India Radio, she was a news reader, president of Assam Swimming Association, Commanding Officer of 60th Assam Girls� Battalion, Coordinator of IGNOU in the Handique Girls� College Cell, among others � something that testifies to her multi-faceted personality.
Her last rites were performed at Sarania Kabarstan in the presence of a large gathering this evening.
