Security tightened in Imphal after serial bomb attacks

IMPHAL, April 26 - Manipur Police have tightened security measures in the greater Imphal area following a series of bomb blasts and threats to schools and private residences in the last few days.

Twin hand grenade explosions near the office of the Manipur Mountaineering Trekking Association (MMTA) at Minuthong here injured a civilian on April 22. The same day a bomb was planted near the Little Flower School at Sangaiporou here.

While an IED was planted at the residential gate of a retired executive engineer in the Haobam Marak locality, the residence of a doctor in Thangmeiband was attacked with a hand grenade on late Wednesday night.

The blast at the residence of Dr Thokchom Chito, head of the Cardiothoracic department of RIMS, was reported at 11.40 pm on Wednesday. Except damage to the main entrance gate and a car parked in the courtyard of the house, no human casualty was reported in the blast.

Condemning the blasts, locals of Thangmeiband Hijam Debwan Leikei staged a protest on Thursday.

Meanwhile, at least 32 people were picked up by the police during cordon and search operations launched by police commandos at two places in the Imphal area.

In search operations covering Wahengbam Leikai, Jiri Parking, Maharani Bridge and Beigo Hotel, the police verified around 175 persons and 17 of them were detained and handed over to the city police station for further verification.
