JORHAT, July 11 - Altogether 51,958 people belonging to 10265 families in 73 villages of Majuli have been affected by the second wave of flood occurring less than 10 days after the first wave ended in the Brahmaputra island.

A Majuli district administration official informed this evening that since Friday evening water from the Brahmaputra and Subansiri rivers started flowing into villages outside the embankment and submerged large areas.

As rescue and relief operations were initiated by the District Disaster Management Authority in the flood-hit areas to bring marooned people to safe places the district administration has opened six relief camps where 166 persons were kept by observing all norms under Covid-19 protocol to prevent transmission of the novel coronavirus.

The official said that the villages submerged were under the Ahotguri, Dakhin Ahotguri, Korotipar, Dakhinpat and Dakhin Kamalabari Gaon Panchayats.
