DHUBRI, Dec 8 - At a time when the char areas of Dhubri district are facing innumerable social and economic problems, goat farming in a scientific manner can be a game changer in these backward areas.

Apart from being financially and academically weak, the people of char areas of the district face many problems throughout the year, which include devastating floods and storms. However, the areas that are suitable for goat farming are potential hubs of animal husbandry.

While inaugurating a three-day training programme on Scientific ways to goat farming, District Development Commissioner, Mahmood Hassan said, Goat farming in char areas is nothing new, but by using scientific methods, such farms can not only contribute to the socio-economic development of these areas but also to the economy of the State and nation at large.

He also said that the char areas are already doing well when it comes to farming but their produce has to face the fury of flood and storm every year. But if these people also concentrate on animal husbandry, they will get a stable source of income.

District Veterinary Officer, Dinesh Chandra Gogoi informed that according to available data, in 2012 the district had 4.44 lakh cows, 2.63 lakh goats and 1.16 lakh sheep, but if scientific methods are used for breeding and rearing of farm animals, their numbers will shoot up drastically. The veterinary officer also said that the scientific goat farming is very cost-effective, which can bring in a lot of profit. He also said that the environment and resources available in Dhubri char areas are suitable for goat farming. DIPRO Bikash Sharma along with many other dignitaries attended the programme, where experts conducted training for many enthusiasts from different parts of the district.
