GUWAHATI, March 28 - The fifth edition of �Ward Talks�, organised by a city-based weekly, was held recently at the Geetanagar High School playground where hundreds of residents of Ward Number 21 of GMC participated, said a press statement.
Localities such as Ambikagiri Nagar, Geeta Nagar, Arunachal Path and Narikalbari, among others, fall within the ward.
The discussion was chaired by Siddhartha Bhattacharya, MLA of Guwahati East constituency. Among others who participated were Hiranya Kumar Barman, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic); Sashanka Jyoti Deka, councilor of Ward Number 21 and Akbar Ali, Superintending Engineer of GMC.
Representatives from several development committees were also present during the event. During the discussion many people complained that while work on JICA-funded water supply project at places like Narikalbari was initiated over a year ago, till date the road dug up in the area has not been restored.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhattacharya criticised IVRCL, the organisation responsible for carrying out the water supply project which is funded by JICA, and said that Guwahati is being destroyed under the tag of development.
�There are several roads in the city that have been ploughed through just after a few days of the construction of the road. IVRCL has been repeatedly requested to coordinate with the other departments before carrying out their work. It has happened on several occasions when the officials have demolished one side of a newly constructed road and I had to rush to the spot,� Bhattacharya said.
The MLA also said many people are facing a dilemma as scarcity of water in the city is a major problem and completion of the project is also a priority.
