Review meet on progress of toilet construction works

GUWAHATI, Feb 5 � A meeting chaired by Dr Nagesh Singh, Economic Advisor, School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, was held here on Tuesday to discuss various issues and the progress made by the Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) in construction of toilets in Assam.

The meeting was co-chaired by RC Jain, Secretary (Elementary and Secondary Education), Government of Assam. During the meeting, discussions were held on the progress of work of construction of toilets by CPSUs in the State. BR Saraf, Executive Director (CSR & SD), NHPC and Rakesh, Executive Director, Subansiri Lower Project, NHPC, and other NHPC officials were also present during the meeting.

Dr Nagesh Singh, while appreciating the representatives of CPSUs, emphasized on expediting the work of construction of toilets so as to accomplish the target by June 2015. Jain requested the representatives of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) to support all the CPSUs in their endeavour to complete the target of construction of toilets in the State within the scheduled time.

The Subansiri Lower Project of NHPC has undertaken the responsibility of construction of more than 2,200 toilets in 2,055 schools in Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur and Sonitpur districts of Assam, which is the largest number of schools covered by any CPSUs in Assam and more than 200 toilets in 107 schools of Arunachal Pradesh, making an expenditure of more than Rs 40 crore from its Corporate Social Responsibility-Sustainable Development (CSR-SD) fund.

For effective implementation of the mission of NHPC, the Subansiri Lower Project has formed 12 teams of its employees and each team has been assigned a cluster of schools in which they shall conduct survey, sign MoU with the school management committees/development committees (SMCs/SMDCs) and monitor the construction activities. For optimal utilization of resources, SMC/SMDC of respective school has been entrusted to undertake construction activities. Provision for water through bore-well has also been planned as per requirement.

During a review meeting held on January 30 through video conferencing, and chaired by Devendra Chaudhary, Special Secretary (Power), Government of India, the Subansiri Lower Project of NHPC has been adjudged the best amongst the various power sector entities in India.

Devendra Chaudhary declared this during the review meeting in the presence of officials of various power sector entities like NTPC, NHPC, PGCIL, NEEPCO, REC, PFC, etc.
