IMPHAL, Sept 13 - Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has opposed the Centres latest move to allow refugee status to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

DESAM said they are going to submit a memorandum to the Union Home Affairs Ministry to apprise that such a move will pose a threat to the people of Northeastern States, especially the smaller indigenous groups.

We are against such steps in order to protect the indigenous population. It is unsafe for North East which already have accommodated maximum number of migrant population, said DESAM president M Angamba while addressing a press meet jointly organised with Apunba Ireibak Maheiroi Sinpangba Lup (AIMS) here on Sunday. He added that they will extend support to student bodies of Assam for protecting the indigenous people and their rights.
