SILCHAR, July 6 - The annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath together with his siblings was celebrated with great enthusiasm amidst a congregation of hundreds of devotees across Cachar district on Wednesday.
Braving the rain and inclement weather, devotees young and old thronged the streets to catch a glimpse of Lord Jagannath. Decorated chariots of the deities were surrounded with people chanting prayers.
The main celebrations were held at the ISKCON temple. Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, Cachar DC S Vishwanathan inaugurated the Rath Yatra by cleaning the path with the traditional golden broomstick.
Praying for world peace, Dilip Kumar Paul said that the festival is a great opportunity for people to unite and work towards building a great nation. He condemned the recent instances of brutal killing of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
Deputy Commissioner S Vishwanathan also said that the festival is a huge reason to rejoice for the devotees of Lord Jagannath.
The Manipuri speaking population of Bhakatpur also brought out the chariot with great enthusiasm.
Rath Yatra was also celebrated at Rongpur Gauriomath, Narsingh Mandir of Silchar, West Singari, East Singari, Shyamsunder Mandir of Tulapatty and Tarapur Bhubaneswar Sadhu Thakur Ashram.
