GUWAHATI, Aug 28 - The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has ordered an internal enquiry after videos showing rainwater leaking heavily from the roof top of the newly extended canopy of the passenger lounge of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), went viral on social media.
The airport authorities has asked its civil engineering section to enquire and submit its report within a shortest possible time.
Rainwater were seen dripping from the roof of the airport following heavy downpour for over an hour last evening after which top officials rushed to the spot to fix the leakages.
However, questions are being raised over the quality of the construction work in the airport, which is being billed as a �world class� airport. The video also showed water dripping on luggage scanning machines and other equipment inside the airport premises.
Rainwater was seen dripping from air conditioner vents and light sockets on the roof.
Director of the LGBI Airport, BK Tailong, told The Assam Tribune that the authorities have taken the matter seriously and have asked its civil engineering section to enquire and submit report.
He, however, informed that the incident did not affect any flight operations or passenger movement and all the flights landed and took off as per schedule.
�It is just shocking to witness such a scene. How could there be leakage in a brand new construction? How can the retention mechanism be so faulty? We smell a rat in the entire development,� Ajay Sharma, a frequent flier pointed out.
�It is the public money that is being wasted,� another resident of Guwahati without wishing to be named commented.
People from various walks of life expressed their concerns by posting the video on Twitter tagging the civil aviation minister. An official statement from the authorities stated �To prevent recurrence of such incidents, corrective measures have been taken on war footing. All concerned at the LGBI Airport have been instructed to carry out checks as per the standing instructions of AAI�.
