GUWAHATI, Feb 6 � Sandeep Rai Rathore, IPS, Inspector General, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), on a two-day visit to Guwahati has reviewed the disaster preparedness of 1st NDRF stationed at Patgaon.
The IG of NDRF interacted with the officers and personnel of 1st NDRF and took stock of the problems and challenges faced by the NDRF personnel in the terrains of Assam.
�The North East Region of India falls under seismic Zone V and the rescue operations in flood, landslide, earthquake and mountain areas are difficult as well as challenging also,� he observed.
Rathore also witnessed a demonstration on �Flood Search and Rescue� by the 1st NDRF.
In his address he said that the North East region is prone to heavy rains and the Brahmaputra basin represents an acutely flood-prone basin characterized by hazards of flood and erosion that creates an annual mayhem of devastations which brings untold miseries to the people, causing colossal loss and damage to public property and infrastructure. He made the suggestion that village wise the local communities living alongside the river banks should come forward to form small response groups within the villages which can use various kinds of improvised floating aids and also spread the knowledge of these aids among the people.
