Preparations on for Adivasi Mahasabha

UDALGURI, Jan 11 - Hectic preparations are on for the 15th Adivasi Mahasabha, to be held with a three-day programme from January 18 at Aba Justin Lakra Kshetra, Khokhabasti, here. The event will be organised by the central committee of the All Adivasi Students� Association of Assam (AASAA) in collaboration with its Udalguri district committee, Tangla Anchalik and Harisinga Anchalik committees. Various programmes, including symposiums, seminars, exhibitions and cultural shows, will be attended by over 3,000 delegates from all over the State, said joint secretary of the reception committee, Suresh Lomga.

A reception committee has been constituted with State Minister of PHE and Food and Civil Supplies, Rihon Daimari, as the president, Pradeep Nag as the working president and Rajya Sabha member Santiuse Kujur as the secretary.

The Mahasabha will focus on the problems plaguing the Adivasi community, their educational and political rights, land pattas, and ST status to the community.

The Adivasi Mahasabha will be held at an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh and it is likely to be attended by more than 50,000 people. The open session on the final day will be attended by BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, former minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, Atuwa Munda and other noted personalities of the Adivasi community.

Meanwhile, Pradip Nag, president of the AASAA, told this correspondent that this mega congregation of Adivasi people would seek to draw the attention of the Union Government towards the problems of the community. The AASAA will take all possible steps to pressure the Union Government to redress the problems within a short period.
