GUWAHATI, July 29 - The State Power Department will introduce a slew of measures soon, including abolishment of British-era practices, introduction of consumer-friendly methods and transparency in matters relating to generation, distribution and transmission, as part of a major overhaul.

This was stated during a high-level meeting conducted by Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain after taking over additional charge of the Power Department at his office in the capital complex today.

The minister took stock of the power situation in the State and discussed ways and means to improve power generation and distribution.

It was decided that 782 tea estates of the State would be electrified, and that the installation of separate meters for every household would be completed in a phased manner on a priority basis. Free electricity connections have also been provided to 75 lakh households in the State so far and the number will grow in the days to come.

The minister suggested that the distribution of power transformers of 100/200 KVA to every constituency of the State should be taken up as a new entity with 30 units in the first phase to every constituency.

Hussain also directed all officials to forge good working relationships with the people and achieve peak hour demands with the commissioning of new power generation projects soon.
