NEW DELHI, Jan 20 �Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has expressed his concern over the resurgence of violence in Assam, with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi informing that the Centre has agreed to rush additional forces to Assam.
The Prime Minister enquired about the recent violence in Assam and told Gogoi that the forces that were deployed in Assam were withdrawn for poll duty in the four States. �I have requested that the additional forces should be now deployed in Assam and they have agreed. I have instructed the Army and the DGP to intensify operations. But today I can�t say exactly how many companies would be rushed and when they would be sent,� he said.
�Three-four major incidents have taken place in Assam in which the NDFB(S) faction was involved. We had held a meeting with the Army and CRPF.�
Asked about the violence in Assam, he said that police has to control the law-and-order situation. �But we have to explain to the people of the State also that indulgence in violence would not lead to any solution. It will encourage others. The people have a right to protest but should not indulge in violence,� he said.
Asked about the charges levelled by BJP the that Congress Party has neglected in implementing the Assam Accord despite the fact that Rajiv Gandhi had signed the Accord, Gogoi retorted that Congress has implemented almost all the clauses of the Accord.
About the clause on detection and deportation of foreigners, he reiterated that he was the one who took the initiative in updating the NRC. On the other hand, the performance of BJP-led NDA was worse.
