Panel for rail fare hike

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 A hike in passenger train fares, particularly in suburban service, and increase in the minimum distance to be covered in passenger and express trains are among the recommendations made by an official committee in its report submitted to the Railways.

The DK Mittal Committee, formed on December 4 this year to suggest ways and means to raise the revenue of the Indian Railways, has made out a strong case for increasing the highly subsidised and loss-making suburban train fares.

The committee yesterday submitted its report to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
