MANGALDAI, Dec 22 - An alleged nexus between an inter-State car lifters' racket and a section of corrupt officials and employees of the State Transport Department has come to light at Kharupetia in Darrang district recently when a Bolero pick-up van owned by one Manohar Mogal of Khatkhati in Karbi Anglong and bearing the registration number AS-25-CC-1485 reportedly stolen seven months ago from Aamingaon area in Kamrup (Rural) district was recovered by the police from Kharupetia.
The brother of the owner of that stolen vehicle, Kabil Hussain, who had come to Balugaon weekly vegetable market to collect vegetables in another vehicle, suddenly spotted the stolen vehicle.
The driver immediately informed Kharupetia police and the police after investigation found the original number plate concealed beneath the present number plate.
Surprisingly, on verification of the registration documents, it was found that the fresh registration was done in District Transport Office in Goalpara in the name of one Mokbul Hussain of Goalpara.
The Kharupetia police seized the vehicle and handed it over to the visiting police team of Khatkhati Police Station where a case in this regard has already been registered.
Now the Karbi Anglong police will carry forward the investigation into the alleged nexus between a section of transport officials and the notorious car lifters' gang. The Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police, Dr Shiv Prasad Ganjala, is reportedly investigating the case.
