NAGAON, Dec 22 - Nagaon-Morigaon Truck Owners� Association today protested against the overloading of sand by a section of businessmen and submitted a memorandum to the Nagaon DFO in the presence of Conservator of Forest, Tezpur Circle for curbing the illegal activity.
The association sought exemplary legal action against those illegal sand businessmen in two middle Assam districts.
The memorandum signed by Ranjit Laskar and Haren Boruah, president and secretary of the association respectively, stated that flouting government guidelines and other relevant restrictions, some sand businessmen were carrying sand weighing 18 to 20 cm in dumpers or six-wheeler trucks from Doboka, Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Baithalangsu, Ram Bangla, Ahatguri and Sitalmari areas, because of which the government is losing revenue of several crores of rupees.
Besides due to overloading of vehicles, the NH road as well as other roads and sub-roads are being damaged, the association alleged in the memorandum.
The association has sought immediate strict lawful action against the sand mahaldars so that the problem of overloading could be checked. The association asserted that as per government guidelines and other relevant restrictions, a six-wheeler truck or dumper is officially allowed to carry only 6 CM (cubic metres) sand whereas these illegal sand mahaldars were carrying 18 CM to 20 CM sand in their trucks.
Earlier the members of the association gheraoed the office of the Nagaon DFO and sought strict legal action against illegal activities of traders.
