GUWAHATI, Jan 17 � The office of the Kamrup (Metro) district Transport Enforcement officer collected fine amounting to over Rs 1.44 crore in the first nine months of the year 2011-12 and the collection broke the records of the previous years.
An official release said that during the checking of vehicles on the city roads, as many as 6196 vehicles including public transport vehicles and private vehicles were found to be violating traffic rules and cases were registered against those. Of the cases registered, 5113 have been disposed of and fines amounting to Rs 1,44,38,808 were collected.
Giving a break up of the cases registered, the release said that 2388 cases were registered against private vehicles, 1772 against trucks, 102 against tourist buses, school buses, etc, 53 against mini city buses and 1881 cases were registered against auto rickshaws, auto vans, Tata spacios, trekkers, cruisers etc. The release said that highest number of 1589 cases were registered in the month of May.
The release further made it clear that only collecting fines from the traffic rule violators is not the main goal of the enforcement wing of the Transport Department. The main aim of the department is to ensure road safety so that everyone is forced to obey the traffic rules. The Transport department has also initiated steps to ensure that no one is allowed to transform the roads into speed tracks.
