MIRZA, July 16 - The flood situation in Kamrup district has further worsened as the water level of the first wave of floods by the Brahmaputra has maintained a rising trend and was flowing 57 cms above the danger level at 10 am today in various areas of Palasbari, Goroimari, Chamaria, Boko and Hajo Revenue Circles in Kamrup district, thus affecting over 80,000 families in over 80 villages.
In Palasbari, affected families of villages, namely Bardia, Bhatkhowadia, Hengratari, Baniapara, Biturtari, Pagladia, Kalardia etc., have shifted to camps or highlands located at Bardia, Bhurakata, Dakhin Bardia, North Bhatkhowadia etc.
Relief was reportedly not distributed among the marooned families till the time of filing this report.
�Relief and rescue operations must be carried out immediately in order to protect us from the deluge,� said Rahman Ali of Sengratari village in Palasbari LAC in Kamrup district.
Erosion by the Brahmaputra has taken a formidable turn and several families of Bhatkhowadia, Pagladia etc., villages under Palasbari LAC have shifted their homes and hearths to safer places.
The Pagladia ME Madrassa and Kalapani High School located at Pagladia village have also been shifted today to Baniapara area near Panikhaiti after erosion started eroding the school buildings, informed Abdus Salam, Headmaster of Pagladia ME Madrassa over telephone while talking to this Correspondent.
Sources said the affected families of Balagaon No. 1, Balagaon No. 2, Batahidia, Saralpara, Maghuwa, Bhakuawamari, Khetrapara and Nayapara etc., villages under Goroimari Revenue Circle in Kamrup district have shifted to highlands located at Batahidia, Balagaon, Khetrapara etc., and the adversely affected families have demanded distribution of relief materials on an urgent basis.
In Hajo LAC too, a large number of villages, including Panditorpam, Gaoburapam etc., have been completely submerged by flood waters of the Brahmaputra and a majority of the affected families have shifted to safer places.
Swirling waters of the Brahmaputra has also forced the affected families of Kuriahamari, Bhaganmari, Naobajchar, Laopara etc., under Barkhetri Revenue Circle in Nalbari district to shift to highlands or relief camps. There is immediate need to distribute relief material among the affected families.
Sources said that several domestic cattle were washed away by the flood waters. Over 600 cattle were stranded at Siayalmari Cow Reserve and Mohmari Buffalo Reserve in Palasbari LAC. It is essential to transport those marooned cattle to safer places. Over 500 cattle and goats were similarly stranded in knee-deep water at Lahisiri Char village under Palasbari LAC in Kamrup district. They too merit rescue on an urgent basis. There is a pressing need to distribute fodder among the starving cattle.
In the meantime, the flood waters have damaged nearly all standing crops in the affected areas of Kamrup district. Hundreds of private ponds in Hajo LAC have been submerged, thereby breaking the backbone of the fish farmers.
The Jalukbari�Hajo�Barpeta Road has been submerged in various places at Gerua�Hajo area and vehicular movement has been closed on this surface communication link since July 15. Significantly, water is still rising over the road, signalling a major disaster in Hajo LAC.
A majority of the villagers of Panikhaiti, Arikati, Lutoridiya, Luturadiaya NC, Kamalapur etc., villages under Boko LAC have since shifted to safer places to avoid inundation.
Flood induced by the Jaljali river further aggravated today and a large number of villages, including Mandira NC, Malibari, Jamlai, Pijupara, Nagarbera (partly) villages under Boko LAC in Kamrup district are presently under water. Flood waters were flowing 3-4 feet above the Hekera-Nagarnera PWD road under Boko LAC and surface communication through the road was completely disrupted.
The MLA of Chhaygaon, Rekibuddin Ahmed and senior officials of Kamrup district visited some of the affected areas on July 15 and took stock of the overall situation.
