Over 2.54 lakh cases in Dhubri district with doubtful family tree information

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

DHUBRI, Feb 18 - The Dhubri administration has identified the names of an estimated 2,54,904 members which do not match the legacy data code submitted by them for inclusion of names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

While addressing a press meet, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri, Anant Lal Gyani said that the number is very huge and they will be reverified by the NRC officials in three phases.

The DC also stated that the legacy data code of 22,794 will be verified in the 1st phase, while in the second phase over 31,000 names will be verified. The 1st phase will be completed by March 31 and the letter of intimation will reach the members seven days before the date. He also added that the entire process may be complex but it will not exclude the names of any original Indian.

According to NRC officials, these un-matching legacy data codes are those which are not recognized by the members originally belonging to the family tree. The officials also say that a major challenge awaits them to identify the origins of these un-matching members. It was also informed that these unrecognized members, may not always mean that they are doubtful citizens. In most cases, they find these to be the members who are on cold terms with other members of the same legacy data holders or members who have used the code by mistake.

Talking to this correspondent, the NRC District Project Supervisor, Shantanu Chakraborty said that to overcome this challenge, they have started the re-verification of family tree for the inclusion of names in the second draft list of NRC from February 17. He also said that in the primary investigation they have found that most of the names that are not recognized by the other members of the legacy code holder are due to the poor relationship between them.

It was also informed that to verify these names for the citizenship eligibility, 137 Investigating Officers have been deputed under 136 NSK centers of the district.

These cases have also been categorized in three types. The Type 1, are the least concern cases, who are called to the NRC centres, while the Type 2 cases are little more complex cases who will be investigated at the circle level Family Tree Verification centres. And we will have District level Family tree Verification Centres where most complex cases will be dealt with, said Chakraborty.

Meanwhile, The Deputy Commissioner also informed that over 1.05 lakh documents of Dhubri District are yet to be verified. This delay is mainly due to the lack of manpower, said Gyani.
