GUWAHATI, April 23 - Welcoming the criminal law amendment ordinance paving the way for providing stringent punishment, including death penalty, for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years brought by the Centre, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has called for even stricter penalties in cases of crimes against women.

AIUDF president and Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal welcomed the move of the Central government but added, But why only child rapists? Cabinet should bring an ordinance with death penalty to anyone who is guilty of rape, irrespective of the age of the victim.

He added, It has always been our demand that rapists should be punished with hanging till death.

Ajmal said the party had earlier raised that demand before the President of India.

I believe that the provision of capital punishment would prevent people from committing such heinous crimes, said the AIUDF leader.

President Ram Nath Kovind had yesterday promulgated the ordinance which had earlier been approved by the Union Cabinet.
