Opposition stalls proceedings over citizenship bill

GUWAHATI, Jan 28: The budget session of the Assam assembly today began on a stormy note, with the Opposition, including the AGP, disrupting proceedings protesting the move to amend the citizenship law.

Barely two minutes into the Governors speech, the combined Opposition members were on their feet displaying placards and shouting slogans against the anti-constitutional moves of the government which are threatening the identity of the indigenous people.

While the AGP members were on their feet, MLAs of the Congress and AIUDF trooped into the well and created a pandemonium near the Speakers chair. The Opposition alleged that the Governors speech was full of lies and the claims of peace and harmony in the state did not depict the actual situation on ground.

Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi was forced to cut short his speech. Unable to control the situation, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami adjourned the house for a 40-minute break.
