Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

DIMAPUR, Sept 6 - The NSCN (I-M) today clarified that its members were not involved in the alleged assault on Imphal Valley-based student union leaders and artistes at Nungba Bazaar in Tamenglong district of Manipur on Monday. The outfit said the GPRN (Government Peoples Republic of Nagalim) has nothing to do with the incident even as it appealed for harmony.

The incident reportedly happened when some singers and members of All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) were returning to Imphal after attending a function in Assam.

In a release, the NSCN (I-M) said it was compelled to issue the clarification in the backdrop of unfounded malicious allegation made by Meitei student bodies against it.

The release said some unknown miscreants, claiming to be members of the NSCN, were involved in the alleged assault on the student leaders and artistes. On Wednesday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said troopers and police commandos had been rushed to Tamenglong district to arrest NSCN (I-M) militants for beating up AMSU members and singers.
