Notice to Chief Secy on SPOs� woes

GUWAHATI, June 15 � A division bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) comprising Chairperson Dr Justice AH Saikia and Member Tarun Phookan took suo motu cognizance of the of the plight of the Special Police Officers (SPOs) of Assam and issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Assam to submit a detailed report in respect of the SPOs, informing the Commission about their service conditions, their service prospects, and the Government�s policy, if contemplated, to redress their reported grievances within 30 days from the receipt of the notice.

The case (No.AHRC 1314/9/15-16) was registered suo motu based on newspaper reports published in both vernacular and English local dailies.

It is alleged that the Assam Government had adopted �mean ways� for controlling the agitating SPs instead of solving their problems by way of regularizing their services and increasing their remunerations.
