No ILP for any new NE States: Centre

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

NEW DELHI, Aug 22 The Centre has no plans to accede to the demand for Inner Line Permit system in any new State in the North-east. The ILP is currently applicable in three North-Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland.

The ILP system under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 is applicable only to the three North-Eastern States. Hence, the question of future of planning does not arise, said Minister of State for Home Affairs M Ramachandran in reply to a question by Kumar Deepak Das.

The Ministers response is significant because Manipur Assembly has recently passed a resolution pleading for introduction of ILP in the State because of the apprehension that indigenous people faced the threat of being reduced to minority by migration of outsiders.

The ILP regulation was mainly for peace and governance of certain districts on the Eastern Frontier of erstwhile Bengal, the Minister said.
