NEW DELHI, Aug 12 - Breaking his silence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that all opportunities would be given to the people of Assam, whose names did not figure in the final draft of the National Register of Citizen (NRC) published recently.
In an interview to a news agency, Modi assured that no Indian citizens will be excluded from the NRC and their concerns will be addressed.
The Prime Minister also came down heavily on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee�s comments on the issue. He said only those, who have lost faith in themselves, fear loss of popular support and lack faith in democratic institutions, can use words like �civil war�, �bloodbath�, etc.
Modi asserted that his government would keep its promise of updating the NRC in Assam. He allayed concerns that the NRC will exclude Indian citizens and assured that all possible opportunities will be given to people to get their concerns addressed.
He also took on the Congress over the NRC in Assam, saying the vote bank politics prevented it from implementing accords the party itself concluded in 1972 and 1982 when it was in office.
Yesterday, BJP national president Amit Shah made an all-out attack on Mamata and said NRC is the best way to identify and throw out Bangladeshi illegal immigrants.
