No decision yet on date of CAA implementation

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Feb 2 - Though the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed by both the houses of the Parliament in December last year, no decision has yet been taken on the date of implementation of it. Meanwhile, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today asserted that the ensuing examinations would not be affected by the agitation against the CAA.

Highly placed official sources told The Assam Tribune that the State Governments would be able to implement the CAA only after the Centre frames the rules for it. The Centre has started the process of framing the rules and sought the views of the stakeholders on the issue.

The State Government, on its part, has also forwarded its suggestions on the rules to be framed for the implementation of the CAA. However, sources refused to divulge the suggestions given by the State Government in this regard. We have submitted our views on the issue and it remains to be seen whether all the recommendations of the State Government are accepted by the Centre, sources added.

Sources also said that though preparations are complete for the setting up of 200 new Foreigners Tribunals , the date for setting up of the same has not yet been finalized. As it was apprehended that majority of the persons, whose names were left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), would appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals, the State Government decided to set up 200 additional Tribunals as it is felt that the existing Tribunals would not be able to deal with extra rush of cases.

The State Government has already appointed members for the 200 new Tribunals and other infrastructure is also ready. The Government is planning to ensure that the new Tribunals start functioning as soon as the Office of the NRC Coordinator starts issuing the rejection slips to those whose names were not included in the NRC, sources added.

Meanwhile, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that the ensuing High School Leaving Examination and Higher Secondary Examinations would not be affected by the ongoing movement against the CAA.

He pointed out that even the examinations of the universities were not affected in any way by the movement.
