No compromise, says AGP

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today ruled out any compromise on the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and said it will oppose any attempts by the Centre to get the proposed legislation passed by Parliament. A meeting was held today at the AGP head office here under the chairmanship of party president Atul Bora.

The party said any attempt to pass the Bill will be a violation of the terms of the Assam Accord and such a situation is unacceptable to the party.

Reports indicate that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, is on the list of business for the Winter Session of Parliament, which began today.

The regional party said Assam has already borne the burden of lot of people who arrived in the State from across the border over the years and that has already changed the demography of the State.

It further stated that adoption of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will make the very purpose of NRC updation redundant. The meeting also decided to hold a public meeting in the city on December 21 to mobilise the masses against the Bill and similar meetings will also be held in all the districts on December 22.
