DIBRUGARH, May 12 - SEWA, a local NGO here, in collaboration with Mercy Corps India has been reaching out to the distressed migrant workers stranded in the district with relief materials.
The non-governmental organization with support from Mercy Corps India has been providing food items and hygiene materials besides also providing psycho-social counselling to the stranded workers. It needs to be mentioned here that several people from the central part of India come to Assam in search of livelihood.
The organization took up the initiative on receiving an appeal from Jharkhand State government to extend necessary help to the stranded migrant workers of their State, who are presently stranded in Assam, a release stated. They provided food items and hygiene materials to the stranded migrant workers in Tengakhat, Ghoramora, Chabua, Lahoal and Dibrguarh urban within the district. Some 56 stranded migrant workers from Jharkhand and West Bengal so far have benefited from the relief drive.
As the nationwide lockdown has been extended to May 17 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the stranded migrant workers continue to bear the brunt the most. The NGO has observed that the migrant workers are gripped with acute distress, hunger and homesick minds. To handle the crisis of the migrant workers in the district, SEWA further plans to initiate more relief works in collaboration with Mercy Corps India, the release added.
Apart from these initiatives under the SEWA COVID-19 Response programme, SEWA in collaboration with �Save the Children� is also distributing masks free for children, tea garden workers and providing technical support to the small tea growers to cope with the crisis arising due to the lockdown.
