New inclusions in SCERT textbooks appreciated

DERGAON, Jan 2 - In what can be termed as good news for the residents of undivided Sivasagar district, the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary and two other topics have been included in the textbook of elementary education under Assam�s Education Department.

Among the 552 historic places of the district, the bird sanctuary has been mentioned in the textbook of Class 8 from the new academic session.

The textbook �Sunbeam English Reader� prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Assam, under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) starts with the lesson �The Princess of Panidihing�. It tells the story of the recovery of a girl from a boat in floods inside the Panidihing Reserve Forest. The lesson speaks a lot about the forest which will shape the minds of children regarding environment protection.

In another chapter, �Dokchory learns about Panchayat� in the same textbook, a premier school of the district � Disangmukh Janajati High School � is mentioned in an imaginative story. In the story, Kongke Mili, the father of Dokchory, carries her to school on a bicycle, and while replying to her questions, he explains vividly the aims, objectives and activities of a Panchayat.

In another textbook �Ankuran� for Class 7, the challenges faced in life by a differently-abled girl is explained in a chapter �Pratyahban�. The life of Princi Gogoi of Sonari is cited in a bid to explain how to develop skills to overcome disability from childhood.

Such depictions of important monuments, villages and schools in textbooks has been appreciated by residents of the district.

Four arrested in bank loot case: Four persons were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the United Bank of India (UBI) Dergaon branch looting case.

Golaghat Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh said Taizuddin Ali (33), Imran Khan (29) and Shahidul Islam (33) of Barpeta district, and Faruk Ali (40) of Golaghat district were arrested for their involvement in looting Rs 20 lakh from the bank on December 6.

Police also seized a Tata Sumo and a Toyota Innova from their possession.

Four books released: Four books written by teacher, writer and journalist Suren Bori were released at Banamali Prathamik Namghar in Golaghat on New Year�s Day.

The books � Kishorehatar Baishnav Pandit Sonaram Chutia (a children�s book), Rubul, Bubul Aru Ikbalar Kathare (a children�s book), Hazarika Siror Sandhanat (collection of stories) and Mising Janagosthir Pasgoraki Mahiyashi Naari (biography) � were released by Srimanta Sankardev Sangha women�s branch central member Ambika Saikia Bora.

The books were released at an open meeting during the 14th annual session of the Banamali primary unit of SSS under the Golaghat regional branch, and Banamali Prathamik Sakha Naamghar held at Paramananda Bikash Kendra. Retired teacher Kushal Saikia delivered a speech on literature, with special emphasis on the writings of Suren Bori.
