New edition of Dr Guha�s book released

GUWAHATI, May 8 - A new edition of Planter Raj to Swaraj: Freedom Struggle and Electoral Politics in Assam 1826�1947, the magnum opus of renowned social scientist Late Dr Amalendu Guha, which deals with the politics of Assam under the colonial rule and in the post-Independence period till 1950, was released at a function held here yesterday.

Noted critic and writer Dr Hiren Gohain, who is also the president of the Dr Amalendu Guha Smarak Baktrita Ayoyak Samiti, released the book at the function held on the occasion

of the first death anniversary of Dr Amalendu Guha in the District Library auditorium here on Saturday.

The book contains the introduction written by noted historian Rudrangshu Mukherjee and also its critical appreciation by Late EMS Namboodiripad and Dr Gohain.

At the same function, Prof Amiya Kumar Bagchi, Professor Emeritus of the Kolkata-based Institute of Development Studies, released the Assamese version of the book. Gopal Bardoloi, an ex-economics teacher of the city�s Handique Girls� College translated the book into Assamese.

Both the books were published by city-based publishing house Anwesa. Prof Bagchi also delivered a lecture on nationalism and imperialism in Indian context at the function, presided over by Dr Gohain.
